When you hear me make that statement, along with the title of the book, it gives you a hint I’m pro-gun.  What it doesn’t tell you is that I shot a gun for the first time on my 45^th birthday. I admit to being scared in the beginning, but I was determined to find a new adventure to share with my husband. What I didn’t realize when I started shooting was just how much more than a new adventure I would find!

Tucson Event with Deb

Deb Ferns will be the keynote speaker on Tuesday, January 26th, at an event hosted by Quality Aesthetics, which is part of the Quality of Life Medical and Research Center. The center is located at 5390 E. Erickson (across from Tucson Medical Center) and the time for the event is from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm.  Deb will be speaking on topics relating to women and encouraging them at the start of 2010 to "take a step outside their comfort zone." This theme is based on Deb's weekly columns posted on the Women's Outdoor News(www.WomensOutdoorNews.com) titled "Outside My Comfort Zone." Deb will be circulating throughout the event so there will be many opportunities for Q&A. 

Anagrace Valez, director of Quality Aesthetics, and other members of the medical center will be on hand as well. According to Deb "the work Anagrace is doing on my face, neck and hands is like a gift that keeps giving every day as I look in the mirror.  The cost of having sun damage and age spots removed permanently through the laser treatments done at Quality Aesthetics is a fraction of what I've paid over the years in spa fees.  I much prefer to spend my dollars on services that work permanently instead of a 'fluff & buff' that lasts less then a day."

Sheila Hoesktra Hosts Shooting Match to Benefit Breast Cancer Research

The pink Babes with Bullets mug isn't just handy for your coffee or hot cocoa.  It's also a fund-raiser for the Komen Foundation on Breast Cancer Research.  Each June 50% of the proceeds from the mug sales will be given to our camper alumni, Sheila Hoesktra, as she and her team of devoted ladies puts on an annual pistol match to benefit Komen Foundation.  We'll add our mug proceeds to her match proceeds and it's a win for Komen and a win for Babes with Bullets!

Babes with Bullets T-Shirts

These custom t-shirts proudly carry the Babes with Bullets trademark logo in two colors of Azalea pink with black print or black with pink printing.  The shirts are heavy weight 100% cotton t-shirts (Hanes) and display the jazzy Babes with Bullets logo imprinted on both the front and the back. The shirts come in sizes of small (4 to 6), medium (8 to 10), large (12 to 14) and xl (16 to 18.)

These 100% cotton t-shirts maintain their sizing if washed in cold water and a low heat setting is used in the drying process.  If you are like Deb, who seems to do clothes washing/drying like a speed event, you may wash it on a warm and dry it on high? "Babes with Bullets" Teaches Women About Guns

September 19, 2008--Women from across Iowa are gathering near Montezuma this weekend, hoping to learn how to handle a gun. It's part of the "Ladies Action Shooting Camp," and serves as a challenge for most of the women.

"I would say in the beginning you wouldn't find somebody who was much more terrified than I was," said Debbie Ferns. She shot her first handgun four years ago and the married mother of two says it changed her life. Today she travels the country as part of the "Babes with Bullets" shooting camp, to help other women experience the same thing.

"My first goal was just to get comfortable around firearms," said Barbara Sloan of Marshalltown. She read about the camp this spring and immediately signed up. "I think it's a great idea for women to teach women and a great idea for women to become comfortable with firearms and weapons," she said.

Women who have never shot before start with the smaller .22 caliber. From there, Ferns and the other female instructors help the ladies work their way up to larger guns and bullets. Ferns says the point of the camp is education and safety, not promoting violence. "I won't suffer giving up anything I enjoy and that I count on because somebody who is ignorant chooses to use something in an illegal way," Ferns said.

The way these women are using the guns seems to be catching on. The waiting list to get into a camp is almost a year out. "Everybody is so supportive. It's really wonderful," Barbara Sloan said.
